Dear Aunty Clara,

Wednesday

This letter is being written in the afternoon about four-thirty and I am trying to rush it through before going to chow a tidbit before five o'clock. Needless to say, on this, my day off, I worked harder than any of the preceding six days since my last working day off. I got into the office along about six-thirty and just now finished up my job. This work just keeps going on and on and on. Next week comes the efficiency reports and there again is a tedious typing job for they must be letter perfect and any erasures or strikeovers must be initialed and; therefore, kept down to a minimum. (or pandemonium's liable to walk upon the scene).

Yes, as I said last night, the fellows have invited me out with them in a tent going out party this evening and since I gave them my word I would go with them, I will have to and I am writing this one letter now so that when I come back, I will not have to hang around the office too long writing the other in the middle of the night.

For some strange reason I woke up as fifteen minutes after five o'clock this morning, dressed, made up my bunk and was passing H&S Company's orderly Room on my way to chow when I noticed in the shadows that the entire company was still out there for the Reveille formation. Amazing. The company did not move over to this areas as was anticipated and the great processional will undoubtedly occur tomorrow.

There was no mail. I am beginning to feel personally slighted by Uncle Samuel's mail service for everyone else is receiving letters dated up to the 9th and even the 10th of June and addressed to this APO while I (who was one of the first ones up here to the monastery) have received that one day's V-mail with the old APO. The percentage doesn't seem to be working out so well on the return mail. It looks as if that is payment for my many months of lackadaisical correspondence and now I must bear the brunt of writing and writing without receiving.

There is not much news except that progress is coming along fairly well on the roof and we kid each other about how we will duck if a cry of "Look out below" comes down to us. We don't think a falling rock would be stopped by a mere canvas tent so have made plans for immediate evacuation to a location beneath our desks.

This afternoon, for some unknown reason, we got to talking about kid's games. O yes, they were discussing the unusual types of games the Filipino children play and how they resemble all the old games we used to play when we were kids. And that got us started on a narration of our younger years when we would play Hop Scotch, Horses on the Runaway, Hide and Seek (with the variation of "I'll make the keyhole and who will poke.") It must have sounded just as strange for us fellows to be talking about that so seriously as it must sound or rather read. Basically it is all a nostalgia for the old familiar times and places when our lives were carefree.

So-long for now and I'll try to write again when I should have much more to write about. What, with a full evening's activities behind me by then.

So-long,
/s/ Roman
