"Hello there, Dad, Rose & Rosana,

Thanks verymuch for the nice birthday card and the very spendable birthday present. And now I have something to tell you. Perhaps you have wondered why I am handwriting this letter and why I have used ordinary stationery instead of V-mail. The reason is that this is the very first bit of writing I have done with the new lifetime Sheaffer pen which I bought at the PX today. So that was really your present to me on my birthday and I would like to thank you for it once again. It is swell --- is a brownish-goldish color, has a silver pen point and the famous white circle which shows it is a lifetime pen. Of course, the writing itself isn't so very good for two or three reasons: (1) I'm not used to handwriting any more, (2) my handwriting isn't so very good at its best and (3) since the pen is so good, I'm trying to break away from my habit of bearing down hard on the pen.

The 24th day of this month hasn't arrived as yet but I feel sure that I will have an enjoyable day if the well wishes I have received to date are any indication of what will be. One thing I know for sure and that is we have a particularly good movie that evening with Bing Crosby in "Going My Way".

I hope that Rosana's birthday party was a success. From what my Aunty Clara said about going to her party on the 12th, you people must have indulged once more in giving Rosana a multiple of birthday parties and Christmases. That is a good idea when she is as young as she is. Best wishes to all.

So-long,

Roman"
