TO BE FILED: UNCLE JACK'S LETTER OF 7/2/44

"Dear Nephew Roman:

I have to laugh when I think back to the last letter I wrote to you. I read in one of your letters that you and a couple of other fellows were doing manual labor and you mentioned that there was no one less than a sergeant at this work. That, evidently, didn't sink in because I addressed the letter to Cpl. Klick. To save face, I rewrote the letter.

Altho the Cubs aren't getting any place in the pennant race, they are drawing the crowds, who evidently are coming out to show that they approve of Der Kaptink, manager Charlie Grimm.

I didn't hear from you regarding the little matter of what I might send to you which you could use. I asked Aunty Clara and she said she just had sent you a pair of moccasins. Of course, I haven't been in Cicero since June 22nd. I called up the other day and Aunty Clara said there was a letter for me from you. Maybe there might be something to that effect in it. I'll find out July 4th.

Also I might read something about that Sgt stuff. Being an all around man, instead of an office clerk, must have got you promoted, eh, pal?

I got this far without mentioning the weather. It went up (the thermometer) to 100° June 26th. And the humidity was simply humidifying.

Uncle Jack
