"Dear Roman
Congratulations on becoming a Sgt. I they thought as highly of you in the army as I do, by this time you would have been a general no less. So many times, Roman, I swear tonight I'm going to write to Roman, and then when I get home, I'm so tired that I lie down and rest, and no letter today. And so the weeks pass.
I wanted to send you some nuts but Clara said you were tired of them. So I'm sending a dollar in this letter, and another in another letter in a couple of weeks, for your birthday. I'd send both of them in this letter but I'm so afraid some one would take it on you. In your first letter to Clara mention receiving it and she will quickly tell me and I'll and I'll send the other. I'm hoping on your next birthday you will be at home and the world will know the blessing of peace again. I am surrounded by my noisy family - Anita, Renee, King, Mary, Red, Bobby & Bill and are they ever like a bunch of howling wolves. It's hard to keep your mind on what you are doing.
I wrote to Clara and offered to take her with me to a lovely resort-hotel way up in northern Wisconsin all expenses paid. But she says no she must make Joe and Florence up in the morning. Gee I sure would have loved to spend a week with her. But I'll spend a couple of days with her after I come back from up north. My vacation is never complete unless I go to Cicero for two days.
