Dear Aunty Clara,

Wednesday

We are having shows every evening now from the looks of things. This evening we are having a picture entitled "The Lost Angel" with Margaret O'Brien and James Craig. I know who James Craig is, a so-so actor, but I don't know who this Margaret O'Brien is. I suppose that it will be a class B picture but I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that it will provide a good night's entertainment.

It appears as if that long postponed appointment at the dentist will have to be made. Of course, just making an appointment doesn't mean that you are next in line for work. Last time it was some three weeks before I finally got to that stage of the game. In the meantime, however, it seems that aspirins will be my opiate. This morning the tooth hurt so very much that I had to come down to the office to get a few of them and they didn't stop the pain! I can see the path that will follow if I keep up this nonsense for I had to take three to kill the pain. Tomorrow or the next day it will be four and then five until the harm the aspirins will work on my heart and on my system in general will far offset any aid that they can give me in temporarily relieving the ache. It is that which makes me decide to brave the dentists chair once again. The funny part about it is that when the pain is in the tooth in the normal course of the day, it may pain worse than any drilling of the dentist yet the mind does not play such tricks. In the chair, the mind runs away with itself, imagining things which aren't true. Things like exposed nerves being touched by drills and all that sort of thing. Not that a person actually pictures that but it is in the back of the mind and does not help the visceral actions which cause those outward signs of embarrassment such as dizziness, beads of sweat etcetera.

I realize that it is a difficult thing to buy a store half way around the world but if I was there, I would surely give it a try. Perhaps after the war some opportunity may arise which will take the place of a grocery store.

That would be funny if Aunty Florence went to Hurley's and got a job and met Pat working there, wouldn't it? But then again maybe that wouldn't be so good.

One thing I began telling you in that afternoon letter and that was about the dessert we had. They were cinnamon biscuits and you know that they are super-delicious. The best part about it was the fact that they gave three out per man and then had a lot left over for seconds. Well, I got four down in the mess hall seeing as how that is all I could eat at the time and then brought three up to the office for later on in the afternoon when three of us fellows had a little afternoon snack of biscuits and water.

The PX freezer is in operation full blast now and not only do they cool off the juices but they also freeze the candy bars before they beginning selling at eleven o'clock in the morning.

The show time is just about here now so I'll have to be trotting of to the barracks to change into my fatigues as I don't care to wear my khakis too much more than I ordinarily would.

So-long,
