ON THE 21ST THE REGIMENT DEPARTED CAMP STONEMAN,
PITTSBURG, CALIF. VIA HARBOR BOATS, ARMY QUEEN AND CABRILLA,
PER PAR. 7, SO#138, HQS., CAMP STONEMAN AT 1545 AND 1730
RESPECTIVELY. THE REGIMENT WAS LOADED ON THE U.S.A.T
FRESIDENT GRANT, PIER 45B, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. BY 2230.
ON THE 22ND THE PRESIDENT GRANT PASSED THROUGH THE
GDLDEN GATE, SAN FRANCISCO BAY BOUND FOR NOUMEA, NEW
CALEDONIA.
ON THE 23RD THROUGH THE 27TH WE WERE ESCORTED SOUTH
DOWN THE COAST BY A NAVY BLIMP. IT LEFT US ON OUR OWN SOUTH
OF THE PANAMA CANAL WHERE WE TURNED TO THE WEST-SOUTHWEST
TOWARD NEW CALEDONIA.
UNIT STRENGTH: 54 OFFICERS - 1267 ENLISTED MEN
JUNE 1943:
ON THE 7TH WE ALL FELT A SIGH OF RELIEF WHEN THE USS
STANLEY CALL, A DESTROYER ESCORT, JOINED US AS AN ESCORT
SOMEWHERE JUST NORTHWEST OF THE SOCIETY ISLANDS.
WE LOST THE 10TH OF JUNE BY CROSSING THE INTERNATIONAL
DATE LINE AND MOST OF US DID NOT GET THAT DAY BACK FOR
APPROXIMATELY TWO AND A HALF YEARS.
ON THE 12TH WE DOCKED AT NOUMEA, NEW CALEDONIA’S QUAY
AND WERE IMMEDIATELY TRANSPORTED BY TRUCK CONVOY TO THE
REGIMENT’S NEW CAMP SITE AT DUMBEA, NEW CALEDONIA. WE
BIVUOACKED IN THE DUMEBEA RIVER VALLEY A MILE AND A HALF NORTH
OF ROUTE #1 ON DUMBEA ROAD. (REMEMBER THE RAIN STORM THAT
NIGHT?) THE PLANNING AND LAYOUT OF THE TENT CITY STARTED
IMMEDIATELY AND BY MORNING OF THE 13TH, ON ARRIVAL OF SOME
